Consulting with families in Darjeeling

In continuation of our consultation process in West Bengal, a seminar was held in Darjeeling on 2 September 2006. This seminar was organised in collaboration with Darjeeling SPARSH.

The 128 participants in the daylong seminar included representatives from IDCS-India, Darjeeling SPARSH and the State Government, as well as deaf children and their parents, deaf young adults and Sr. Gabriella, Principal, St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, Kalimpong.

The theme of the seminar, as previously, focused on highlighting the emotional and social needs of deaf children. Each paper presented was translated into Nepali and English for the general audience and interpreted in sign language.

From the expressive sign and body language used by the children as they presented their papers, it was clear that this was a valued opportunity to discuss issues of concern.
