VOICES

We are working with local communication for development NGO, VOICES to raise awareness of childhood deafness and deliver information to families with deaf children in an innovative way.

VOICES is a unit of Madhyam Communications, and exists to find innovative ways of communicating information to empower communities and create social change.

Need for the project

Over 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who have no experience of deafness. Many communities in both rural and urban areas of Karnataka have misconceptions about the causes and impact of childhood deafness. Written information either in hard copy or online is generally inaccessible.

Sreela Bose, IDCS-India leads a workshop for teachers of deaf children.

Access to information is important to us all

  • information day for families of deaf children
  • the establishment of parents' clubs where families can meet each other and access information
  • sign language and communication classes
  • using community radio to talk about the causes and impact of childhood deafness.
