Persons With Disabilities Act, 1995
The Persons With Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act was passed by Parliament on 12 December 1995 and notified on 7 February 1996.
It elaborates the responsibility of Central and State Governments, local bodies to provide services, facilities and equal opportunities to people with disability for participating as productive citizens of the country. The Act enlists the rights and facilities persons with disabilities would be entitled to and which are enforceable. It is an important landmark providing for both preventative and promotional aspects of rehabilitation.
