South Asia

Two thirds of the world’s poorest people live in Asia. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal are home to almost 500 million people living on less than $1 a day. For poor people in these countries, deaf children are often not a priority. Deaf Child Worldwide is working to make sure deaf children in the region access their rights.

Deaf Child Worldwide's first country programme was in India, and we will develop work in other countries accross the region through our Small Grants Programme.

Two children in Assam

We have been working in India since 2003 and have activities in Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal and Assam. India is Deaf Child Worldwide's largest country programme and our presence really is needed as it is estimated that there are 3 million deaf children in India.

Close up of girl signing

In Bangladesh, we have supported two projects in the Sylhet District to promote the inclusion of deaf children in their families, communities and schools. Many of the families trained in Bangla Sign Language through this project had been struggling to communicate with their deaf children and the project also made it possible for 25 deaf children to access non-formal basic education centres in the area.
