The little deaf hero

Silvano is deaf, he is 23 and is from Pula in Croatia. He was born in a deaf family, both his parents are deaf as well as his two brothers. Silvano finished secondary school in a school for the deaf in Zagreb. He followed a vocational training course to become a locksmith and returned to Pula where he followed additional training to become a computer operator. Silvano was the best student at primary and secondary school. He has found it very difficult to find work and is now unemployed.

Silvano participated in a Deaf Child Worldwide SGP funded project with Prolingva aiming to develop accessible information for deaf children to learn. These interactive materials aim to provide deaf children and young people with visual materials to develop emotional and literacy skills. Silvano wrote a story,
the Little Deaf Hero, to inspire deaf children. You can learn more this project on the project page.

Once upon a time, a deaf boy in a small town had a dream. All night he dreamt that he was a superhero. It was amazing! He had super powers and could even fly. In his dream, he flew over the house where he lived, over his village and far far away. He was so strong and flew so high he could see everything that happened below. If anyone was in danger, he could fly down and help them.

The next day, after waking up and getting ready like every day, he went to school. He was so excited by the story that he told all his friends how he had this amazing dream and how he wished it would be true. He wanted to be a superhero! His friends laughed. They told him "You could never be a hero! You are deaf, deaf people cannot become heroes!" This made the boy very sad.

When he left school, he went to the park and sat there, by himself. He was thinking about how happy he had been in the dream and how his friends had laughed. Why couldn’t deaf people be heroes? He just wished he wasn’t deaf and that he could be a hero, and fly over the school, over the town and help people all around the world.

Whilst he was lost in his thoughts, out of nowhere, a fairy appeared. She fluttered around him and asked him why he was so sad. "I’m sad because I will never be a hero and I will never be able to fly! I want to help people and I just don’t understand why deaf people can’t be heroes!" the little boy told her. The fairy looked very confused… "But you are already a hero, little boy" she started to explain. "You help people all the time, you help your mum at home. You listen to your friends when they’re sad. Remember that old lady you helped carrying her bags yesterday, that makes you a hero!" she continued. "Being deaf doesn’t matter. What really matters is who you are and how you live. If you are good and honest and help people around you, you are a hero! Always remember this." And the fairy just disappeared as quickly as she had come.

This made the boy very happy. He left the park and ran home. That night he was dreaming again, flying in the sky, helping people. The little boy is a real hero because he is giving love to people around him.
