Drawing on her own experience as a deaf person working in deaf education, Judith Collins highlights the important role that deaf adults have to play in supporting deaf children and their families.

This article contains an account of her work with deaf children in mainstream schools and with Asian parents of deaf children in Leeds. Judith highlights the value of a family support group, which bought deaf and hearing parents together and enabled hearing parents to learn more British Sign Language.

The article explains about the advantages of the communicative language teaching method and some of the challenges which Asian mothers faced in learning BSL. Other activities such as home visits and the university play group run by deaf adults are also mentioned.
