Promoting integrated early childhood development in Morogoro, Tanzania

This article introduces the integrated early childhood development initiative at the Kilakala Unit for the Deaf in Morogoro, Tanzania, which began in May 2003. The emphasis is on young deaf children between the age of 2, 5 and 7 years of age and the programme is family-centred and based on the principles of child rights. The first experiences of this community-based programme are described here in the context of national policy initiatives. A community theatre group, consisting of deaf and hearing young people, will support and complement their efforts. Lessons learned will be shared with wider audiences.
