Paper synopsis
This article provides a useful introduction to the challenges facing the parents of deaf children in sub-Saharan Africa in ensuring that their children gain access to education. UWAVIKA represents parents in the Northern Zone of Tanzania but would like to play a role in the formation of a national parents’ organisation. The association has played a crucial role in promoting the establishment of small units for deaf children attached to mainstream schools. Their next major project is to set up a secondary vocational school to provide deaf young people with valuable skills.
