About me
I am 20 years old, born deaf. I am a student in college. I have no problem being deaf; I am happy. I have lots of friends - both deaf and hearing.
My Story
I will write about my school life. I went to a normal school for one year when I was four years old. I did not understand anything so I moved to a special school for the deaf in Delhi from age five. I studied there until I was 19. I passed class XII in five subjects.
The teachers in my class taught using the oral method. They did not use sign very much. This meant that we found it very difficult to understand anything that was being taught to us. We were just taught to answer questions; no examples were given to help us understand the subject being taught. We need teachers in deaf schools who know how to sign well. In foreign countries, the teachers are good at sign but in India they do not sign much.
Now I will tell you a little about my family: I live with my mother, father and older brother. My parents sign very little and insist I speak but I find that difficult. My brother used to sign well but now he is busy with work and does not have time to sign anymore. When he does sign, he does not interpret the whole spoken conversation, only in brief. So, I miss out on the full information/ conversation.
I like travelling. I need to meet deaf people from around the world to learn sign from them. I like to learn different sign languages.
I have an interpreter which is very helpful.
Lastly I am happy that I am deaf and have both deaf and hearing friends who sign with me.
I dream of a fellowship to go and join with a family where the whole family signs.
Bye. Thank you!
