About me

I am 19 years of age and am currently studying Psychology and Sociology at Oxford Brookes University, living in Halls of accommodation. I am in my first year and really enjoying student life! I am unsure what I would like to be in the future although a career in psychology is a possible option. I recently went backpacking in Europe for the summer, which was an amazing experience.

My Story

My mum and brother are both like me, hearing impaired. My dad is the lucky one! As firm believers in Inclusion, myself and Ian (my brother) attend mainstream schools. We have a severe hearing impairment and both wear two hearing aids.

Two years ago a friend and I held a camp for hearing impaired children to invite a friend along to. This was for a weekend and involved a wide range of activities. It took place in Aldridge at Woodlands Campsite, which provided dormitories with bunk beds, kitchens and a hall.

The aim of this camp was to attempt to break down barriers and hopefully allow the children to go home with at least a little more confidence should they seek it. The activities that took place there were archery, canoeing and the most exciting was probably the adventure trail which was an assault course and a glide over a lake!

The camp took place under the Jack Ashley Millennium Award scheme.

I have been involved in many other activities and schemes that involve my hearing impairment. For example I have been a role model for a 4-year old child for several years who has a hearing impairment. This involved visiting him at school and seeing him at Christmas, just to generally let him see that in years to come how things may be and to generally provide positive support.
