About me
I was born on 10th October 1970 in a middle class family, my father was a clerk in the Income Tax Department. My parents were grief stricken when they realised that their daughter was born deaf. My father was worried about my upbringing and future and this was compounded when my younger sister was also born deaf. I also have one more sister and a brother.
My Story
I had to face many difficulties and challenges in completing my studies, but I successfully completed the 10th standard in the Omkar and Lions School for the Deaf, when I was 14 years old. People say, that my determination helped me to reach my goal.
My time at school introduced me to sports and my keen interest lit a spark in me. I started practicing short and distance running. I trained hard to become an athlete. I did not want to be a financial burden to my family and I wanted to become economically independent.
Pursuing my goal to become a fine sports person, I traveled all over India to take part in various National and state games of the Deaf.
I have participated in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th National Games of the Deaf in 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1992 held in Kanpur, Jamshedpur, Nagpur and Delhi. Till 1988 I participated in 100m, 200m, 4*100m relay events and I won many gold and silver medals at various levels. In 1992, I was also crowned the National Women Champion in Table Tennis and also won the Doubles tournament. My proudest moment came when I was chosen to represent India at the 17th World Games for the Deaf, held in Sofia, Bulgaria in July 1993. My performance enabled India to take the seventh place.
I train and practice for four hours everyday. I never feel bitter about what others call my “handicap”, I feel happy that I have been able to achieve so much.
An amount of Rupees 38, 000 was raised by my employers, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, to bear my expenses to make the trip to Bulgaria to represent India as a proud citizen. My achievements were widely covered in the press. Government officials showered me with praise and I have also been congratulated by various organisations.
Even at the age of 35, I like to visit the Omkar and Lions School from time to time, to talk and joke with my former teachers, who are still proud of my achievements in sports and life.
I really hope that other students at the school can follow in my footsteps, either as sports people, or in any other field of their choice.
