About me

My wife K. Sundara Leela and I have three children, our daughters Vasundara and Lakshmi and our son Vijaya Kumar. We are a normal Hindu family with traditional norms and values. I am the only one of my family who is deaf.

My Story

Five years ago I successfully completed my Secondary School Certificate in the Omkar and Lions School for the Deaf and two years later I obtained the ITI (Electrical) certificate at the Training Center for Adult Deaf in Hyderabad (capital of Andhra Pradesh province). It took me some time to look for a job, but now I am working in the private sector.

People think at first sight that I am a normal 25 year old young man who likes watching sports channels and who enjoys cultural events like folk and regular dancing. However sport is my passion, above all cricket and running. My idol is P.T. Usha, the famous Indian runner who received a medal at the Olympic Games. In my discipline, distance running (400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10 000m) I won all the regional, district and even national championships in my age group. Jörg Krämer, a volunteer at the Omkar and Lions School says that I have got so many cricket and running certificates, that it takes time to count them all.

My best performance so far was the seventh place in 4*400m men's relay at the 20th Deaflympic Games in Melbourne 2005, an event for Deaf and Hard Hearing athletes and friends from around the world.

While the success in Melbourne (Australia) was the highlight in my young career, I am still thirsty for success and certificates. That is the reason why I am practicing very hard every day for the next Deaflympic Games and I would like to represent my mother country India again as a proud citizen and athlete.

The government of India did not give me any financial support to go to Melbourne and they will not give me any aid for the next Deaflympic Games to represent our country. Had Mr. B. Bala Krishna Murthy from “All India Sports Council of the Deaf” not given me the Rs. 75 000 for the flight charges, I could not have gone to the Games. However there was a remaining amount of Rs. 50 000 to be paid for food, accommodation, sports kit, transport etc. which my father had to borrow from friends.

I have a strong relation to my sister Vasundara as she is the only one of the my family who knows sign language. Vasundara is looking after my needs and when we are together we enjoy our time and talk about sport events.

I do have future aspirations outside of sport, my dream job would be to teach deaf children physical education and sports.
