Michael's diary
My diary
Simeon Afolabi, an audiologist, met Michael at the National Ear Care Centre, in Nigeria, for his hearing assessment. Simeon found that Michael had had malarial meningitis which resulted in his hearing loss.
Audiometric assessment showed a profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He has been fitted with hearing aids which allow him minimal awareness of environmental sounds.
Simeon asked Michael some questions about himself and here is what he replied:
I cope with my studies by watching my teachers while they are talking or I will look attentively either at his mouth.
I cope with my friends by watching their mouth or actions that they do, and also if I do not understand I ask them, but I enjoy them when I am with them.
When I am with my brothers I let them understand what I say and they will let me know what they are saying by writing it or spelling it for me.
When I am with my parents I discuss things with them all the time and ask questions from them. I copy in social functions by watching what they are doing and join them. But at times I feel sad and cry to God.
