My diary

Humble Hearts students in the classroom David’s teacher, Beatrice writes:

David lives with his brother at quarry slums, he is charming, loving and a born leader. This I notice because he is always organising the rest of the kids, correcting them and reporting any incidents such as bullying etc.

David became deaf at the age of 3 years after a meningitis attack. As he was really young, he has always known himself deaf. His mother was really sad when the doctor told him about the situation she prays and hopes that David, being the only deaf child in a family of 5 siblings, shall cope well with life, get an education and become independent, the rest of the family members like him a lot and are always ready to assist him where possible.

Initially, David was attending Kuja School for the Deaf in Kisii town until he was sent out from school due to a lack of school fees. We met his mother as we doing our home visits looking for deaf children. She told us about David’s case and requested us to admit him in our school since she believed him to be a bright boy who can make it in education.

I walk 3 km to and from school. According to the school timetable, school begins at exactly 8:00am. So by 8:00 am, I am in class for my morning preps. At 8:15am we assemble for parade which takes about 15 minutes in which announcements for the week are given. We are checked if our shoes are clean. Then we pray and classes begins at 8:30am.

When I began school I didn't have any school uniforms. My teacher, Beatrice bought me a shirt, a pullover and a pair of shorts. Some of the kids in school still don't have full school uniforms including I. Our school uniform is a dark purple shirt black pullovers with 2 dark purple stripes on the waist, black shorts, grey socks, with dark purple stripes at the top, purple T-shirt and white shorts for P.E and black shoes. I like the combination of my school uniform unfortunately none of us can afford it in full. I hope one day we will.

My favourite subjects are mathematics and science. I like mathematics because I can confirm if am wrong or right and I understand every instruction sometimes I get a few wrongs but I always strive to excel by asking my teacher to help me.

My mathematics teacher is a bit tough, he tell us that he wants all us to pass our exams, not finishing your homework is a big offence to him. I enjoy science because I discover a lot about nature especially parts of our body its amazing the way the heart, lungs and the rest of the body works.

We break for lunch at 12:30 we eat different diets everyday sometimes rice and beans or ugali with vegetables.

My favourite sports are football and athletics. I enjoy soccer, watching and playing it myself.

At 3:30pm lessons end. We break for 30 minutes depending on the timetable then school ends at 4:00.

After school at home I help with housework, like washing the utensils, l wash my shirt and socks. You know my classroom floor is not cemented the dusty floor makes my shoes and socks very dirty, I have to wash after every 2 days because the school rules requires that we should be clean. After washing I do my homework and wait for supper at 7:00. I normally go to bed early because there is no electricity in our area. I am only able to visit and play with my friends on Sunday’s afternoon after church.

I want to work hard in school, pass my exams and become a computer engineer and live a better set up not the slum area where life is hard.
