- Synopsis:
The NZEVE Deaf Children's Centre in Zimbabwe ran an SGP-funded project focusing on disseminating informal and practical learning techniques. One of the outcomes of this project was to share learning games with primary school teachers at resource rooms in Mutare and Manicaland.
In Mutare and Manicaland, 155 deaf children attend 19 resource rooms at local schools and one-preschool, The quality of education is low. Teachers have limited sign language skills and children often leave school functionally illiterate, without opportunities to access secondary education and virtually no chance of employment. Teaching often focuses on rote learning with children's participation in learning being infrequent.
The project run by the Nzeve Deaf Children's Centre aimed to introduce more creative teaching to 19 resource rooms for deaf children.
Group work, learning games and different methods of teaching were used to encourage curiosity, allow experimentation and increase the participation of the children.
Games and educational resources were provided to each resource room invovled in the project. At the end of the project, the team documented some of the learning games which they had used. The games cover basic numeracy and language skills and can be played using paper, cardboard, or plastic, playing cards and other locally available items.
