Synopsis:
Signs of Russia was started in 1995 to support the development of a kindergarten for deaf children aged 2-7 years using Russian Sign Language.

Kindergartens for deaf children in Russia traditionally use oral approaches. It became a registered charity in 1996. Since 1995, the charity has sent £200 a month to pay the salaries of deaf and hearing people who work with young deaf children using sign language.

It receives regular reports from the staff on the work that is carried out with the children. Signs of Russia also takes an interest in the bilingual classes for deaf children that have been developed in a school for the deaf. Some of these children went through the kindergarten signing programme.

It also receives information about the new Centre for Deaf Studies in Moscow and in the further education programmes that are being developed. Further information about the project can be found on our website
Issues encountered:
Issues for Signs of Russia are similar to those for other projects in Russia.

These include: ensuring safe ways of sending money to Russia, recognising cultural differences in attitudes to deafness and education, responding to the ever changing political situation in Russia and the implications this has for educational provision, and appreciating the situation for the parents of deaf children and the decisions that they have to make.
