Improved Communication between young deaf children and their families in Vietnam

Thuan is a bright and energetic eight year old deaf boy. He was envious of his sisters when they brought books home from school everyday. Thuan tore their papers out of frustration and anger.

Samoa Early Intervention Programme: Explained

In Samoa, the Loto Taumafai Society received Small Grants Programme funding for their Early Intervention Programme. This enabled deaf fieldworkers to visit deaf children and their families across the Samoan islands. The fieldworkers encourage sign language development and communication methods with the whole family. They also educate the family about the value of deaf children attending school. Many Samoan deaf children do not attend school because their parents do not see the value of it. LTEIP is challenging this belief at a family and village level.

The Kilakala Unit in Morogoro Tanzania ran an innovative drama group which promotes community awarenss about the rights of deaf children. It also helps young deaf people explore sensitive issues around growing up, sex and HIV/AIDS.

Abdul Ghani is the father of six children, four of whom were deaf. His involvement in an inclusive education project shows how parents of deaf children can make a valuable contribution in the classroom ensuring deaf children previously denied an education stay in school.
