Meet Rajeswari

Rajeswari lives in Karnatake, South India.  She is no able to live with her parents as there is no school for deaf children in her home village.

Her family found out that she was deaf when she was three years old, but being a poor family they could not afford to travel to the nearest town to visit a doctor and knew little about the support available.  life is hard enough in Karnatake and the family did not know how they could help Rajeswari.

It was Samuha-Samarthya, a community-based organsiation, supported by IDCS, which eventually reached out to Rajeswari and her family.  They helped Rajeswari to obtain a government provided hearing aid, and although this is a great start, there are still no facilities for repairing the aid locally.

Additionally, the only education available for Rajeswari is in a mainstream school, where teachers use speech to communicate.  Rajeswari needs a lot of support to be able to cope and her grandmother works consistently with her following the guidance provided by a visiting community worker from Samuha-Samarthya.  Thanks to this support, Rajeswari has greatly improved her lip reading and speech and is managing to keep up in class.

it is organisation like Samuha-Samarthya working at the community level which make a big difference to the lives of children like Rajeswari.  It is for this reason that we only work in partnership with local organisations who are able to reach people in their communities and who will be able to ensure that our work continues long into the future.

Donations to IDCS enable us to support more organisations like Samuha-Samarthya and help us to make sure that more children like Rajeswari will access the services that they need.
