Summary:

To train communication skills to deaf children and people in the community in order to include them in community development.

Aim:

The project aims to mainstream communication between deaf children, their families and communities and to advocate for their rights.

Beneficiaries:

70 deaf children and their families from the Ameru community in Meru district, Kenya.

Activities:

- Training of Kenya Red Cross volunteers and CBR staff in Kenyan sign language so they can train others and act as interpreters and advocates of deaf children.
- Provide information on deafness to parents of deaf children.
- Classes in Kenyan Sign Language for parents of deaf children.
- Educational and communication activities for pre-school children to prepare them for starting school.
- Seminars for older deaf children on rights, sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS.
- Home visits by CBR staff and referrals to service providers.
